With the changing of seasons we thought it was a good time to chat baby bedding and the different options when it comes to safe sleeping.
Whether you're preparing for a baby or your little one is already here we hope we can help answer your questions.
First things first... the crib!
When choosing the crib, look for something that is portable and includes a zip down side for easy night time access to your baby for feeds. It's also nice to have mesh sides so you can check on baby easily through the night, trust me, you will check them a million times when they first arrive home! We've heard from so may parents that although Moses baskets are the traditional option, many are often a little small and babies soon grow out of them so if you can have an option of a potable crib this is a perfect solution.
One of THE best items we can recommend is the SnüzPod 3 in 1 Crib which is suitable from birth to around 6 months, at which point they're fine to go into a larger cot or cot bed. The Crib is portable too so you can easily move it between rooms during the day and then back onto the stand when you go to bed. The other amazing feature this crib offers is the zip down mesh side which makes bedside night feeds a dream and has a handy shelf to hold muslins, blankets or a magazine for Mama.
Available in 7 beautiful colours, these really do compliment any room decor and come with a luxury mattress included.
Those first few months...
When you bring your little baby home, it's a good idea to have swaddles and large muslins washed and ready to use at nap time. Swaddling is a safe and gentle technique to keep your baby warm and make them feel secure while their sleeping.
Below we've included a safe swaddling guide by Mama Designs to help you perfect your technique. It's best not to use thick blankets and duvets in a crib or cot as these can be dangerous if the baby wriggled under them.
We have a range of swaddle options including the Mama Designs collection and the Etta Loves Sensory Muslin Swaddles which are designed to help aid babies visual and cognitive development...clever!
If you prefer the idea of a sleeping bag the brand new SnüzPouch is designed for babies from 4kgs (8.8lbs) and has a handy zip front to allow for easy access nappy changes. It's also available in 2 tog ratings, more on this soon!
Another options is to tuck your baby in with a specially design blanket which is breathable and helps them feel secure still. To see more options click here.
As they grow...
When your baby is a little older baby sleeping bags provide a safe and handy sleeping solution for wriggly babies, when the blankets are kicked off and you're spending half the night tucking them back in! The Mama Designs Babasac is so well designed and combines two tog options in one sleeping bag. Perfect for holidays when you don't want to pack multiple sleeping bags and they come in 3 sizes (up to 36 months)! Baby sleeping bags are used by over 95% of UK parents and these really are a design triumph.
Here's a little advice from Mama Designs on which tog to use depending on the room temperature...
Confused about which tog baby sleeping bag to use?
Your Babasac can be either 2.5 tog (with the inner layers) or 1.0 tog (without layer). 2.5 tog – for use all year round with room temp 10-20° (10-15° with pyjamas or sleepsuit,15-20° long sleeved bodysuit, sleepsuit or lightweight pyjamas) 19-20°1.0 tog – for use in warmer weather or room temp 21-23° (with a short sleeve body or vest). We recommend that you use a room thermometer to check the temperature. Ideal temperature is 18°.
More information on safe baby sleep and the ideal room temperature can be found on the Lullaby Trust's website here.
